1 .TH VXWM 1 vxwm\-VERSION 2 .SH NAME 3 vxwm \- Versatile X Window Manager (dwm fork) 4 .SH SYNOPSIS 5 .B vxwm 6 .RB [ \-v ] 7 .SH DESCRIPTION 8 vxwm is a versatile dynamic window manager for X, forked from dwm. 9 It adds quality-of-life features such as 8-sided resize, cursor warping, enhanced floating toggle, gaps, fullscreen support and more — all of which can be enabled or disabled at compile time via simple defines in modules.h (similar in spirit to dwm-flexipatch). 10 11 It manages windows in three layouts: tiled, monocle and floating. Layouts can be switched dynamically to optimize for the current task or application. 12 13 In tiled layout, windows are arranged in a master area (left, one window by default) and a stacking area (right). The number of master windows and master area size are adjustable. Monocle maximizes all windows to screen size. Floating allows free moving and resizing. Dialogs and certain window types are always managed as floating. 14 15 Windows are organized by tags. Each window can have one or multiple tags; viewing a tag (or set of tags) shows all windows with matching tags. 16 17 The status bar (per screen) displays tags, current layout symbol, focused window title, and root window name text (set via xsetroot(1)). Selected tags use different colors; occupied tags and focused window tags are indicated with squares. 18 19 A small border around windows shows focus state. 20 .SH OPTIONS 21 .TP 22 .B \-v 23 prints version information to stderr, then exits. 24 .SH USAGE 25 .SS Status bar 26 .TP 27 .B X root window name 28 is read and displayed in the status area (set with 29 .BR xsetroot (1)). 30 .TP 31 .B Button1 32 on tag → view only that tag 33 on layout symbol → toggle tiled ↔ floating 34 .TP 35 .B Button3 36 on tag → add/remove that tag from view 37 .TP 38 .B Mod4\-Button1 39 on tag → apply tag to focused window 40 .TP 41 .B Mod4\-Button3 42 on tag → toggle tag on focused window 43 .SS Keyboard commands (default MODKEY = Mod4) 44 .TP 45 .B Mod4\-Shift\-Return 46 Start 47 .BR st(1). 48 .TP 49 .B Mod4\-p 50 Spawn 51 .BR dmenu(1) 52 for launching programs. 53 .TP 54 .B Mod4\-b 55 Toggle bar visibility. 56 .TP 57 .B Mod4\-j / k 58 Focus next / previous window. 59 .TP 60 .B Mod4\-i / d 61 Increase / decrease number of master windows. 62 .TP 63 .B Mod4\-h / l 64 Decrease / increase master area factor. 65 .TP 66 .B Mod4\-Return 67 Zoom focused window to/from master area (tiled layouts only). 68 .TP 69 .B Mod4\-0 70 View previously selected tags. 71 .TP 72 .B Mod4\-t / f / m 73 Set layout tiled / floating / monocle. 74 .TP 75 .B Mod4\-space 76 Cycle to next layout. 77 .TP 78 .B Mod4\-Shift\-space 79 Toggle focused window floating ↔ tiled. 80 .TP 81 .B Mod4\-Shift\-c 82 Close focused window. 83 .TP 84 .B Mod4\-[1-9] 85 View windows on tag 1–9. 86 .TP 87 .B Mod4\-Tab 88 View all windows (all tags). 89 .TP 90 .B Mod4\-Control\-[1-9] 91 Toggle tag 1–9 into/out of view. 92 .TP 93 .B Mod1\-[1-9] 94 Apply tag 1–9 to focused window. 95 .TP 96 .B Mod4\-Shift\-0 97 Apply all tags to focused window. 98 .TP 99 .B Mod4\-, / . 100 Focus previous / next monitor. 101 .TP 102 .B Mod4\-Shift\-, / . 103 Send focused window to previous / next monitor. 104 .TP 105 .B Mod4\-Shift\-q 106 Quit vxwm. 107 .SS Mouse commands 108 .TP 109 .B Mod4\-Button1 110 Drag to move focused window (toggles tiled → floating). 111 .TP 112 .B Mod4\-Button2 113 Toggle floating state of focused window. 114 .TP 115 .B Mod4\-Button3 116 Drag to resize focused window (toggles tiled → floating). 117 118 When BETTER_RESIZE is enabled, resizing works from all 8 sides/corners. 119 .SH CUSTOMIZATION 120 vxwm is configured by editing 121 .B config.h 122 (keys, colors, rules, bar, etc.) and 123 .B modules.h 124 (enabling/disabling patches and features), then recompiling. 125 This approach keeps vxwm fast, minimal and secure. 126 .SH SEE ALSO 127 .BR dwm (1), 128 .BR dmenu (1), 129 .BR st (1), 130 .BR xsetroot (1) 131 .SH ISSUES 132 Java applications using XToolkit/XAWT may show only grey windows due to ICCCM non-compliance assumptions in older JDK versions. 133 134 Workarounds: 135 - set 136 .B AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit 137 - run 138 .B wmname LG3D 139 or 140 .B xprop -root -f _NET_WM_NAME 32a -set _NET_WM_NAME LG3D 141 - for OpenJDK: 142 .B _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 143 .SH BUGS 144 Report bugs and send patches to the maintainer (wh1tepearl) via the repository: 145 https://codeberg.org/wh1tepearl/vxwm
